Compound effect: Why should you never underestimate the power of compounding.

Domino effect: 🁭🁯 Do you know about the domino effect? If you know about it, then we'll done if you don't then let me explain. So, in the book 'The One Thing' by Gary Keller. He mentions that " In 1983, Lorne Whitehead wrote in the American Journal of Physics that he’d discovered that domino falls could not only topple many things, but they could also topple bigger things. He described how a single domino is capable of bringing down another domino that is actually 50 per cent larger. " You won't understand the power of the domino effect by a simple definition so let me explain it to you. Consider a domino 2 inches tall. So according to the definition, a domino can bring down another domino which is 50 percent larger. So the 2-inch domino can bring down a 3-inch domino and the 3-inch domino can bring down a 4.5-inch domino.  It's a geometric progression and you will be surprised to know that the 17th domino can topple a domino almost the size of the L

How do monks remain so calm

Before telling you anything let me tell you what's the daily life of a monk like-

There are Christian monks, Buddhist monks, Hindu monks, Jain monks etc. Here I will tell you only about Buddhist monks.

Buddhist monks go on a morning almsround every day (i.e. go to collect alms for the people). The local people give food to the monks to eat, but monks are not permitted to ask for anything. This practice maintains a link between the local people and the monks. Monks eat whatever the people the people offer them, be it fruits, carrot, brinjal etc. Monks also train themselves to not be picky and choose what they want to eat. Monks only eat food just to sustain their life and not for taste. Monks then spend most of their time meditating, praying and spreading wisdom among the people.

Now onto the main question:
How do monks remain so calm?

This can be answered by their lifestyle which I have told you at the beginning. Monks generally lead a very simple life and they do not have any external wants because they are not permitted to do so. Monks remain grateful for what they have and do not think about getting the latest phone or television, eating a burger at MacDonald's, watching the new show etc. They are simply just grateful for what they have. This reduces a lot of mental clutter.

A monk lifestyle is generally devoted to attaining spirituality and hence they meditate a lot. Monks wake up early in the morning and meditate for about 1-3 hours and they do the same at night. This serious practice of meditation enables a monk's mind to be more mindful and to remain at the present moment and hence remaining calm.

Think of an example: You have an assignment and you have to submit it the next day. You now have the power to do two things:

1) You become aware that you don't have much time and keep on thinking about the deadline and how much work you have to do and do not concentrate on the task at hand.

2) You become aware that you don't have much time and instead to thinking how much work you have to do, you instead focus on the task at hand.

In which of the case would you think a person would be more calm.
Certainly in the second one.

That's the key principle of staying calm. To stay calm we just need to we aware of the present moment and do the task without complaining. Monks through meditation learn to quiten their mental voice and focus on the present moment instead of worrying about past deeds and future tasks.

You can use this technique to be calm. Whenever you are tensed, just take 5-10 deep breaths and just focus on what you can control. You can't control time or your environment but you can surely control what you do.

This is how monks stay calm.
